The city sleeps, Cipriani opens.

While San Sebastiano is still a blue silhouette, the workshop lights go on: the first espresso of the day is pulled over an empty square.

Acireale's breakfast.

First light touches the baroque façade. Almond granita, cream and warm brioche reach the tables: this is the hour when the square has breakfast.

Noon is savoury.

The square is full and the façade takes all the light. Arancini and hot food come out of the counter: lunch standing or seated, in front of San Sebastiano.

Two granitas on the table: pistachio and almond
Pistachio and almond, the long 5 pm shadow

The afternoon tastes of pistachio.

Gelato, cannoli and seasonal granitas. The Basilica's shadow stretches across the tables and the square slows down: it is time for merenda.

The aperitivo, in front of her.

San Sebastiano's façade lights up and the tables stay out in the square. A drink, something from the counter, and the illuminated baroque as the evening's backdrop.

Closing time. The story stays.

Chairs back on the tables, the square turns blue again. Tomorrow it all starts at four — as it has since 1957. Keep scrolling: this story reached the United Kingdom.

1957

The Caffè opens in Piazza Lionardo Vigo, facing the baroque façade of the Basilica of San Sebastiano. Ever since, the day has begun at four in the morning.

2013

The new generation of the founding family — Salvo, Alessandra, Francesco and Eufelia — carries these flavours to Cambridge: Aromi is born, today with several locations in the United Kingdom, telling how the heart of the project was born in this very square. A family legacy, not a chain.

Today

The Caffè is still here, with the same green awning and the same impossible hours. Anyone looking for Acireale's granita ends up in this square, sooner or later.
